Bills pausing ISTEP accountability signed into law
01/21/2016

SB200HB1003Signing.jpgTwo laws which will pause ISTEP accountability sanctions for a year have passed the General Assembly and signed into law by Gov. Pence today.

HB 1003 (Rep. Bob Behning – R, Indianapolis)  decouples ISTEP scores from teacher evaluations for the 2014 – 15 school year, as well as release performance bonuses to teachers. SB 200 (Sen. Dennis Kruse – R, Auburn), holds nearly all schools and districts harmless on A – F accountability grades for the same period.

ISTA started calling for a pause in accountability nearly two years ago based on common sense data from other states’ experiences in transitioning to new standards and standardized tests. From their experiences, ISTA predicted an adjustment period resulting in lower than normal test scores.

Throughout the fast track passage of these bills, policymakers have uniformly made it a point to thank teachers for their continued hard work on behalf of students throughout Indiana.
