Coalition to address Breakfast in the Classroom program
04/01/2015

PBIC LOGOA coalition of partners, including the ISTA, will host a Breakfast in the Classroom summit on April 8 at 10 a.m. at Feeding Indiana’s Hungry located at 5722 W. 74th St., Indianapolis. Coalition leaders will explore how to make the Breakfast in the Classroom program work in Indiana schools and discuss the grant opportunity in greater detail including: the qualifications for eligible schools, the needs assessment and action plan for potential schools and training for school building staff. Superintendent Glenda Ritz will be the summit’s keynote speaker.

Indiana was selected to participate in Breakfast in the Classroom to provide much-needed healthy and nutritious morning meals to local students and help increase participation of the federally-funded School Breakfast Program. Indiana school districts can now apply for grant funds from Partners for Breakfast in the Classroom. School districts will be selected based on the number of students that qualify for free or reduced priced meals, average daily participation in school breakfast programs, and district and school-level support. The districts will be selected later this spring.

Breakfast in the Classroom is a great opportunity for school districts to help eliminate hunger in the classroom in a way that has significant impact on students’ well-being as well as their academic progress. We encourage schools throughout Indiana to apply for a grant from the Partners for Breakfast in the Classroom because of the great impact it can have for students in our communities.

Partners for Breakfast in the Classroom, a consortium of national education and nutrition organizations, includes the Food Research and Action Center, the National Association of Elementary School Principals Foundation, the National Education Association Health Information Network, and the School Nutrition Foundation . The Partners for Breakfast in the Classroom are working in conjunction with state partners, including ISTA, Feeding Indiana’s Hungry, Indiana Association of School Principals and Indiana School Nutrition Association. Attendees can RSVP here.
