Educators to Rally in Opposition to Anti-Public Education Group
07/25/2016

On Wednesday, educators from across the state will rally to protect public education. The rally takes place during the annual convention of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) hosted in Indianapolis.

ALEC, a Washington, D.C.-based lobbying group, funded by corporations and wealthy donors, is responsible for writing legislation in Indiana and nationwide that promotes private company takeovers of public schools, school vouchers and high-stakes teacher evaluations, while restricting collective bargaining and due process for educators.

"ALEC has driven the privatization of public education in Indiana," said ISTA President Teresa Meredith. "Our state is a leader in funding private school vouchers and charter schools with taxpayer money to the detriment of the more than 90 percent of Hoosier kids attending public schools."

ALEC is responsible for much of the "education reform" legislation in Indiana. The lobby group has named its education "model" legislation the "Indiana Education Reform Package" following its implementation in the state.
