House bill to remove Ritz as chair of state board clears another hurdle
02/06/2015

HB 1609 which would remove the Superintendent of Public Instruction as chair of the State Board of Education was heard in the House today on 2ndglenda_pointing_2.pngreading. The House voted along party lines to amend the bill to push back the power move to July of this year.

Gov. Pence released a statement after the vote stating in part:

By advancing HB 1609 on the House floor today, members of the General Assembly took an important step toward achieving (harmony in education governance).

Several amendments failed that were offered by Democrats Terri Austin (D-Anderson), Vernon Smith (D-Gary), and Matt Pierce (D-Bloomington)—each would have protected Ritz’s role as chair of the state board.

The bill now moves onto its 3rd reading (final; first half of the session) vote by the full House next week.

ACTION: Keep contacting your representatives and tell them to stop the legislative attacks.
