Input needed: Proposed diploma changes
06/10/2015

ccr2.pngIndiana is in store for all new high school diplomas. Last year the General Assembly charged a committee to make recommendations in changing the types of diplomas to the Indiana State Board of Education.

The Core 40 Subcommittee, made up of various stakeholders, has met and submitted a proposed draft to change Indiana’s current diplomas. The recommendation is to continue with three diplomas: College and Career Ready (CCR) diploma will replace the CORE 40 diploma; Indiana Honors diploma will replace Academic Honors and the Work Force Ready diploma will replace the General diploma.

These diplomas would take effect beginning with the class of 2022 (2018 – 19 school year).

Some specific points to consider about each set of diploma requirements:

CCR diploma

Credit requirements = 44 minimum

Personal Financial Responsibility is added along with a College and Career Readiness Sequence coupled with a “graduation capstone” experience.

Under electives—College-bound students are advised that they should complete at least four credits in the same world language (sign language is considered a world language).

Indiana Honors Diploma:

Credit requirements = 48 minimum

Must meet all CCR requirements, earn a GPA average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, earn a grade of at least a “C” in all courses that count toward the diploma and complete at least two additional experiences from the following list:

    • Earn at least four credits with a letter grade of at least “B” in AP or IB courses and take corresponding exams.
    • Complete at least six credits in the same World Language and two Fine Arts credits.
    • Earn at least six transcripted college credits with a letter grade of at least “B.”
    • Complete an Industry-Recognized Certification, One-Year Certification or a state-approved alternative.
    • Earn a minimum composite ACT or total SAT score (established by the Commission for Higher Education in consultation with the IDOE and Indiana college admissions officers).

Workforce Ready Diploma:

Credit requirements = 40 minimum

New math requirement bumped up from four to six credits (all students must be enrolled in a math course or state-approved alternative during each year of high school).

Must complete at least one of the following graduation capstones aligned with their chosen CCR pathway plan:  Acquisition of a Career Credential; Career Experience; at least three transcripted college credits.

As currently drafted, not every local school district is required to offer every type of diploma.

The INDOE is seeking public comment on the committee’s recommendation. ISTA members are encouraged to read through the recommendations and offer public comment. Comments can be submitted through a survey on the INDOE website until June 30.
