ISTA calls on legislators to take action next week to prevent impact of ISTEP scores
11/12/2015

In light of the issuing of low ISTEP scores, Indiana State Teachers Association president, Teresa Meredith, released the following statement:

Today, ISTA is calling on the Indiana Legislature to take immediate action on Organization Day, Tuesday, Nov. 17. Indiana law will require students, teachers, and schools to be punished without taking legislative steps to ensure that our education communities aren’t penalized by long-expected, low ISTEP scores.

Gov. Pence and legislative leaders have conceded the need to amend Indiana laws to ensure this won’t happen. Yet, there seems to be no urgency, and we have no timeline or details. We are calling for all of those things today. The scores at this stage are essentially meaningless and should be used only as a benchmark – nothing more.

On Nov. 17 the Indiana Legislature can, if they choose to, enact a simple statement to ensure our teachers, students, and schools don’t suffer from the long-expected drop in scores caused by a new test built on new standards.

Teachers are tired of talk. It’s time for action, and we are asking policymakers and the governor to act next Tuesday.
