ISTA members explore new lessons through Lilly Endowment grant
07/25/2016

In January, the Lilly Endowment awarded 100 K – 12 educators with the Teacher Creativity Fellowship. The endowment grants each honoree with $12,000 to complete a project of personal and professional importance. More than 40 of the Lilly grant recipients this year were ISTA members.

Two ISTA members are completing their projects this summer and blogging about it as they go.

Heather Oaks [pictured left], Highland Middle School, is bicycling across the U.S. to gather information for students. She plans to have her students use what she’s learned to create scientific projects about various regions across the country. She also hopes to initiate a community service project for students.

Oaks has been blogging along her bicycle journey. You can read her blog and see pictures from her adventure here.

Rick Dubbs, Monrovia Middle School, is using photography to tell his story. He has attended photography workshops to hone skills. Dubbs is using his new skillset to photograph the natural world and wildlife conservation efforts in Indiana and Michigan state parks to share with his physical science students. You can view Dubbs’ outstanding photos here.
