ISTA president observing Finland school system
09/12/2016

Finland’s school system is famous for having some of the world’s most effective public schools and respected teacher preparation programs. ISTA President Teresa Meredith will observe these programs firsthand as she visits Finland this week as part of an NEA-funded trip.

Meredith’s journey started Sunday with a nine hour, overnight flight to Helsinki.

“I couldn't sleep on our flight, I was too excited and kept thinking of more questions I wanted to ask when I arrived,” said Meredith.

Joining Meredith are 19 other state association presidents on the educational trip. The presidents will learn about Finland’s unique approach to teacher training. The group will also visit schools and talk with board of education and union officials to learn about the country’s culture of supporting teachers and students and protecting developmentally appropriate learning.

“We all have things going on back in our states, but we all believe this trip will help us better discuss the education of Finland at home, especially when legislators are wanting to compare us to Finland,” said Meredith.

The trip lasts until Friday. We will provide updates on Teresa’s visit throughout this week.
