ISTA thanks Senator Long for exercising leadership in supporting teachers
03/03/2016

Long_and_Teachers.jpgAt a press availability today, Senate President Pro Tempore David Long (R – Fort Wayne) addressed the possibility of the House voting on the controversial teacher pay bill, SB 10.

“We’ve made our point clear,” said Sen. Long. “We need to take a step back from the idea. The teaching community doesn’t support it and doesn’t see it as supportive of the profession. They see it as the opposite. And, that’s not the goal. I think we need to have buy-in by the education profession. It’s time we stop being perceived as anti-teacher, and we need to start doing things that are perceived as being pro-teacher. That’s what our message was last week, and it’s still the same.”

We would like to thank Sen. Long for his comments today and for his leadership in killing HB 1004 and opposing SB 10.

There is nothing teachers want more than to work together on these issues and others. Teachers solve problems every day locally with their school administrators, and they want to work with legislative leaders in the Statehouse as well.

SB 10 is scheduled for a final vote in the House on Thursday.
