Mandatory kindergarten still not a legislative priority for policymakers
02/26/2015

Kinder_Kids.jpgAt the start of the 2015 session, ISTA announced its student-centered legislative goals. Among the top objectives for ISTA is to lower the compulsory school attendance age from 7 to 5 years old. We believe Indiana has an opportunity to lead many other states by ensuring young people have the best chance for success throughout their academic career.

However, as StateImpact Indiana highlighted:

This year, state Superintendent Glenda Ritz and the Indiana State Teachers Association made mandatory kindergarten one of their top legislative priorities. But two bills to do just that never even made it out of committee.

Although making this change looks unlikely this legislative session, ISTA will continue to focus on efforts that will give Indiana’s students a solid educational foundation.
