Outreach to Teach to Rehab Lafayette’s Oakland Elementary School
03/30/2016

INDIANAPOLIS — March 30, 2016

The Indiana Student Education Association (ISEA) and the Indiana State Teachers Association will sponsor Outreach to Teach April 9 from 7:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. at Oakland Elementary School, 611 S. 21st St., Lafayette. The annual event rewards a deserving public school with a makeover. Volunteers from ISEA, ISTA, ISTA-Retired and community members will clean, paint, landscape and decorate the school in one weekend.

“Outreach to Teach is an enormous event that requires a lot of work and planning, but it is worth all the effort and hard-work,” said ISEA Vice President Mikaela Gerba. “This is a great opportunity for ISEA members to give back to the education community they will enter after graduation.”

Oakland Elementary School was chosen as this year’s Outreach to Teach project following a years-long closure and a conversion to an alternative high school. Now, the reopened school is in need of updates to better serve its purpose as an elementary school.

This project is a community celebration with U.S. Sen. Joe Donnelly, Sen. Ron Alting, Reps. Sheila Klinker and Randy Truitt and Lafayette Mayor Tony Roswarski expected to attend to congratulate volunteers.

Outreach to Teach is still seeking funding and in-kind donations to ensure the full project list for Oakland is completed. Contact Mark Shoup, ISTA professional resources coordinator, for more information on donations.
