Rep. Earl Harris (D-East Chicago) passed away yesterday after an extended illness. Earl represented northern Lake County in the Indiana House for nearly 32 years.

Earl Harris was a great and long-time friend to public education, teachers and school employees. He will be remembered for always speaking from a common sense perspective and for getting to the heart of the matter quickly.

Earl was remembered by his House colleague, House Minority Leader Scott Pelath. "Earl Harris was one of the finest and most visionary lawmakers I ever knew. He was a tireless advocate for the future of Northwest Indiana, a first-rate thinker and most of all he was a true gentleman who was beloved without exception. East Chicago, Northwest Indiana and the entire state are already diminished by his absence."

One of his closest colleagues in the legislature, Rep. Patrick Bauer (D-South Bend) said, “The one thing he knew how to do was to calm the storms and bring the ship home. Today, Earl’s up there and continues to calm the storm.”

Public school employees across Indiana owe Earl a debt of gratitude for his persistent support throughout the years. He will be sorely missed.
