State board votes to delay much discussed diploma changes
11/04/2015

HS_Grads.jpgToday, the Indiana State Board of Education voted unanimously to delay the approval of much discussed changes to Indiana’s high school diploma. Last year the General Assembly charged the Core 40 Subcommittee with making recommendations to change the types of high school diplomas issued by Indiana schools.

Numerous constituency groups and parents, comprising interests in fine arts, physical education, special education and world languages, expressed concern for the proposed diploma changes. The groups have provided feedback that the proposed requirements would narrow state curriculum and decrease the variety of educational opportunities available to students.

As a result of the strong stakeholder opposition to adopting the changes proposed by the Core 40 Subcommittee, board members adopted a resolution that will instead send the proposal to a committee being formed by Superintendent Ritz. The committee has been tasked with refining the requirements, while taking into account input from stakeholders, including those who did not have input on the first proposed changes.

The committee is charged with presenting updated diploma types to the state board by April 1, 2016.
