Teacher compensation appeal heard by Indiana Supreme Court
03/17/2016

Gavel.pngLate last year, the Indiana Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the Jay Classroom Teachers Association in their case involving their collective bargaining agreement. The appeals court ruled teachers can bargain to be paid for ancillary duties occurring during regular teaching hours, and upheld that Indiana law prohibits giving discretion to school administrators to set beginning teacher salaries.

Earlier this month, the Indiana Supreme Court granted petitions to transfer the case and assumed jurisdiction over the appeal.

Today, oral arguments were heard from attorneys representing the Jay Classroom Teachers Association, Indiana Education Employment Relations Board and Jay County School Corporation.

As the justices consider their decision, we maintain our desire for the appeals court decision to stand.
