In a Statehouse news conference today, ISTA President Teresa Meredith announced ISTA’s 2016 legislative priorities. Addressing Indiana’s teacher shortage, ISTA’s agenda seeks to ensure every kid has a caring, qualified and committed teacher.

The legislative agenda is a comprehensive approach to solving Indiana’s teacher shortage. The solutions address the shortage by proposing policies that demonstrate respect for the profession, enhance teacher recruitment and promote the retention of the hard-working educators already in classrooms.

The teacher shortage goes beyond classroom teachers. ISTA’s agenda also focuses on our educational support professionals and the important work they do serving our school children.

ISTA’s priorities came directly from our members who attended one of our fall forums held around the state. Members from Mishawaka to New Albany shared their stories, which exposed common themes related to the teacher shortage. Their wealth of knowledge and experience was instrumental in developing our agenda.

ISTA will provide opportunities for every member to engage legislators throughout the session. For more information on upcoming events and how to reach your legislators, visit https://ista-in.org/lobbydays
